It’s that magical time of year when we take out the autumn decorations and find ourselves crazed as Theta Moms, searching for that perfect Halloween costume to make our kids happy. My son always seems to choose some intricate costume and I usually end up on a wild goose chase to find it. My daughter on the other hand is pretty simple to please – she always wants to be some sort of princess.
But holy frick. Every year, I say the same damn thing.
Ready?
Here’s a recent tweet I sent out recently {before I officially gag}:
That’s right ladies – make a quick Google search for Halloween costumes for little girls and I guarantee you will be horrified at some of the images.
In one particular shop, one of the *bestsellers* is a CHILD sporting a mini-skirt and tall boots called the “Go Go Girl” – Ummm, really? Do these manufacturers and merchandisers really think I want to dress my 4-year-old like a stripper in a nightclub?
Is that the kind of message I want to send to my daughter and is that what she wants to send out to the world – at four years old?
Seriously? Why oh WHY are there so many inappropriate costumes for girls, especially LITTLE GIRLS???
I don’t know what’s scarier, the fact that these stores continue to carry this garbage – or the moms who actually BUY THIS CRAP AND THINK IT’S CUTE.
Call me crazy but the last time I checked, my daughter is only four and I’d like to keep her wearing pigtails and dressed in costumes that fit properly and send the right message. I want her to be a LITTLE GIRL for as long as possible – a smart, caring, creative, talented and beautiful 4-year-old girl without the need to dress her up like she’s 24.
Is that too much to ask?

I get it. 100%. I have a feeling we are going to end up as another princess or fairy, but I am kind of particular about what we even choose from.

Ugh. So glad to see that I am not alone in this. My daughter is 9, and her regular wardrobe choices are ridiculous…Halloween costumes? Good grief. She opted to be a “Batterina” this year.. which comes complete with a tutu, tights, and the works. I got the next size up just so that it will cover everything that NEEDS to be covered.

Couldn’t agree more. My daughter is also 4, and I am constantly baffled by the age inappropriate clothes and costumes available in her size. I also wish costume manufacturers would make some women’s costumes that are suitable for walking around the neighborhood while taking your kid trick or treating; most seem designed for frat parties or street walking.

I don’t even understand what the costumes are for the most part. And tween girl costumes are just simply shocking.

Nope… not to much to ask at all! I hate the costumes that they have for girls! Not only do they look like strippers the costumes cheap! You’re lucky if you can wear it once without it falling apart!
I started making costumes for my girls. They’re a lot nicer, age appropriate, and they last for years!

I couldn’t agree more. Halloween is the time of year I’m most happy to only have sons. Who the heck are the people who are BUYING these costumes??? Because if no one bought them, manufacturers would stop selling them! Sorry, I don’t want to see anyone’s DAUGHTER dressed like a streetwalker!

Hear, hear! (Or is it here, here? I’ve never been able to figure that out.)
In any case, as the mother of a daughter, I agree. Wholeheartedly.

P.S. My almost-3YO daughter is going to be Piglet this Halloween. Which I figure is the antithesis of “sexy.”

Exactly why I’m thankful I have boys 😉

I’m with you on this Heather!
(and also glad I have boys in this particular case :))

You are so NOT crazy… It’s ridiculous the costumes. And I’m not one to judge too often, but the moms putting their girls in this stuff cannot seriously think it’s cute! I mean, I hope that they felt no other choice… so wrong. I keep saying I NEED to learn to sew. My mom made all of my costumes and they were cute, APPROPRIATE, and inexpensive but not cheaply made like the crap they’re selling. If you start a shop, I’ll be your first customer!
