I had a moment today.
A moment experienced in motherhood that brought me so much clarity.
We spent the day at my sister-in-laws. It was there that my son played with some of his baby cousins and not once did I have to raise my voice. Not once did I have to remind him to be careful with the little ones. Not once did I have to give him a warning for unacceptable behavior or the evil eye for playing too rough with the girls.
Not once.
Today was glorious. It was one of those days that make raising children look easy.
Today.
As music played softly in the background and a serene calm crept over all of us throughout the car ride home, I turned toward my son who was sitting quietly in the backseat looking out the window.
I asked, “So why were you such a good boy today?”
I continued to glance at his piercing blue eyes and with folded hands gently resting on his lap, little did I know his response was about to take my breath away…
Word so fleeting, but words I have managed to hold onto for the last four hours.
Words I have replayed in my mind over and over as I have revisited that moment in my head all evening long…
“Because I always want to make you happy mommy.”
Oh my little boy, if you only knew how happy you make me. More than you’ll ever know…

Anne – That is exactly what it reminds me of. The days I want to pull my hair out or when I wonder if I am doing a good enough job – a moment like this literally makes me pause and thank the man upstairs for bringing this little person into my life – and these moments are what make the journey SO worth the ride.

Those are the moments we have to think of when we have the total submerged by motherhood days.
We seem to forget about those good times, when we’re in over our heads.
I know I have to make myself remember the peaceful days, when in the midst of an attack by all 3 of my guys.
Beautiful reminder, of how they really want to please us.
Thank you.

Alexandra – That’s what I thought of, too. He wanted to please me – and they probably want to more than we think.
Heather says
There must be something in the air. My husband and I were just talking about how well behaved our almost-three year old has been the last few days! He looked at me and said, “Maybe the terrible twos are almost over? At last!” I’m just hoping he’s right and it wasn’t just a whim!
I think the best thing about parenting is that one moment every day that you seem to have with each of your kids that makes you just want to hold that moment forever and never let go. Those are the best.

So sweet. It reminds me of the time my guy was little (probably about four) and was standing by the doorway of the sanctuary at church. He was watching his friends go out to run wild, but I had told him to stay in the room. As he stood by the door, a friend of ours asked him what he was doing. He replied, “I want to play with my friends, but I love my mommy.”
Heart melting to me. He loved me that much that it helped him to obey.

What a wonderful moment. It’s these times that make all the other hard stuff so worthwhile, isn’t it? What a sweet little guy. I love it when the planets align and they just want to be little angels. Today I announced breakfast was ready and Sweetness hollered from the other room “I’m washing my hands!” NEVER has she done this on her own, let alone without lots and lots of reminders. I didn’t even ask her to. Must be something in the air. Here’s hoping it stays.

Aw, that is very sweet. I remember the first time my boy (2 at the time) said to me, “Mommy, you so bootiful.” It’s so important to record moments like that. I actually write them down in a pretty, pressed paper journal that I keep. I know when one day when my son is grown up it will make me very happy to read through these memories. And, truly i don’t want to sound morbid, but when I’m gone I hope my son reads through the journal and can see how much I treasured those simple moments.
