Writer, blogger, mom – writer blogger, mom blogger, a blogger who is a mom that happens to write – whatever inference that is made about me or this blog, I know who I am and what defines me because I am more than just a blogger.
I am a writer.
Many would argue that in order for one to call herself a writer, she would have to be distinguished, a published author of sorts. Although I am still waiting for one of my children’s books to go to print (that will be one fine day) this blog IS published and I am the AUTHOR of this blog.
Therefore, I am a writer.
I write passionately about topics that have an impact on me. I write frequently about redefining the role of motherhood which truly is the heart and soul of this blog; the unscripted process of parenting that I navigate my way through daily. I write about my hopes, fears and aspirations because this blog is in many ways a reflection of my life. I write reviews based on products and companies that I completely trust and support. I write about the evolution of blogging including how to build community, the benefits of networking and how to reach a specific audience.
I write authentically with honesty and conviction. I know who I am and what this blog stands for and I aim to articulate this voice throughout every post. And I will never lose sight of that.
Moving forward, I also recognize what I want out of this blog as I write. I want first time visitors to become subscribers, knowing instantanly that this is a blog they want to return to. Moreover, I want you (my amazing readership) to be actively engaged, relishing in every word of every post and become immersed in this world that I create.
I want you to be informed, invigorated, motivated, reassured and inspired. I want you to leave my blog impassioned, looking forward to the next published piece.
I want my writing to resonate with you. I want the words of this blog to speak volumes.
As I cultivate, devise and completely deluge my passion for writing at Theta Mom, I am overcome by some other blogs that absolutely inspire me. When I visit these blogs I am increasingly blown away by their talent as writers. Although there are so many blogs that I read and adore, I would like to share two blogs in particular that inspire me specifically as a writer.
Jenny Mac – Let’s Have a Cocktail When I stumbled upon her blog shortly after I began Theta Mom, I knew from reading the very first post that she was a gifted writer. Her language is natural, effortless and always seamless. In addition, she is one hell of an amazing storyteller. Every time I read a post perfectly crafted by Jenny Mac, I am immediately drawn into her blog. One of my favorites is Finding Your Way, a post which clearly demonstrates her amazing ability to tell a story.
Aidan Donnelley Rowley – Ivy League Insecurities Aidan continues to impress me on so many levels. Saying that she is a gifted writer is an understatement. I found her blog only a few months ago and once I read one of her posts I was immediately hooked. She is forthright and passionate, but at times also quite vulnerable which makes her blog so relatable. She recently wrote about her late father in Maidy–Bunks’ Picnic, a beautifully written post that truly moved me.
These two talented women make me want to become a better writer and I am honored to be blogging with them. And let’s face it, we all know when it comes to blogging content is everything, right?
Now I would love to hear from you: In addition to being a blogger, do you consider yourself a writer? Which bloggers or writers continuously inspire YOU and why?
Kerry says
writing is an outlet. I wanted to start a blog to do just that. To receive emails, messages on facebook and phone calls saying that I inspire and am making someone think about their life and experiences, is well, overwhelming. It makes me feel like a writer. Validated.
I am still inspired by Heather Armstrong @ dooce.com I have read her blog for over 6 years. She is real and witty and draws me in after all these years. I feel like I know her. that is a writer.

I was at my husband’s family reunion/grandma’s 90th birthday party recently and a cousin sat down and stated his sister thought I was a talented writer. Another cousin-in-law to my right asked, “Oh, are you a writer? Did you publish something?” I told her “I sure did write, and I sure was published… almost three times a week. You should have seen her eyes. I then added “on my blog.” We had a good laugh.
If people enjoy reading your thoughts, then what’s to figure out? You write they read. It’s a pretty simple equation.
Good Luck to all you writer’s, and yes I’m looking you Ms. Blogger : )

very nice post! i would like to consider myself a writer. in fact, i started a blog as a way to get the words out that just wouldn’t be happy hidden into my fiction. i also have trouble finishing long-term writing goals, so blogging is perfect for me since it works by a post-by-post basis. thanks for the new perspective, it was refreshing and definitely something i should give some thought to!

I am blogging because I love to write…and to experience the magic that happens when I find the perfect combinations of words that express exactly how I feel. And, the times when I think, that perhaps I am a writer, I read it and feel…honest, true to myself, and real.
Am I a writer? – oh, I would love to confidently say I AM! …but my confidence is not there yet … my blog is my daily practice.

I find that my young blog is practice as well. I have noticed that so far, I’ve varied tone and even language to an extent.
I once was at a conference for the author of The Sweet Potato Queens. She said she sat down, wrote the book through, and did not edit a word. Her editor changed one word that she ended up changing back. I think that is extremely abnormal, but all the same wonderful for her. I believe most writers practice and most edit like crazy.

browneyes_24b @ Larry's Ass says
When I hear the word, “writer,” I think of someone who is distinguished and gets paid to write. Neither of these characteristics are ones that I label myself as, as much as I would love to be both! In answering the question as to whether or not I consider myself a writer I would say I am an amateur. I have “written” for many years via journal/writing courses in school/poetry/music. My blog is the first time I’ve ever put myself out there for the world to read. Writing to me is like a machine. If the machine isn’t used very much it gets a little rusty and squeaky but with time and attention it improves and excels. That is what I hope to accomplish with my blog since it is the first time I’ve written in years.
I find inspiration in a lot of people. Some of them bloggers, some of them writers, some of them a breed all their own. I’m fairly new to the blogging community and have yet to discover those who captivate me. I know that this blog – thetamom.com – has me coming back over and over. I just discovered it, but it is becoming one that I frequent because it is wonderful! The only other person I can think of for this question is Morgan @ The818.com. She is both brilliant and hilarious. Her heart is huge and it shows throughout her blog.

I am laughing because I certainly write enough words to be a writer! Most of my posts are like short novels! I am really working on writing better posts instead of just long posts. I think this is an art. I do think we are all writers but there is always room to work really hard on making your writing better. A true writer is always perfecting her craft right?
I am starting to think about freelance writing because I adore research and I am really up to date on a lot of parenting topics. I think I would really enjoy that.
You are so inspirational Heather and it is great to have you as a friend in the blogging community. Of course you are a writer!

Quixotic says
I absolutely consider myself a writer as well as a blogger. Having a readership who you connect with, sometimes daily, is perhaps even more intrinsic to being a writer than simply having some words published. Having had journalism training, if I am writing about what I consider important issues (like my last post on the exposure of children to porn via milk bars etc.) I like to include research and facts, as well as opinion. I don’t tell my readers what to think, I tell them the issues, and what I personally think of them, then invite them to make up their own minds.

I agree, when you write a post based on something either currently happening or a “hot” topic that you can back up with supportive evidence, it can be pretty powerful.
Jodie at Mummy Mayhem says
I think of you as a writer. For sure. No question.
But funnily enough – and I’m being honest here – even though I have my own blog, I don’t think of myself as a “writer”. I just can’t. I don’t know why. Maybe I’m not confident enough to do so. I’m a blogger, yes. But a “writer”? Nup.
And I’m absolutely not fishing for people to tell me I am. ABSOLUTELY NOT! I’m just being honest. I had a fellow tweep pull me up with this a couple of times, and insist I call myself one. But I just can’t!!!
Is that weird?
Good for you though. You’re confident, and your writing is great. Your blog is GREAT!

I know the more I write and the more I read the better I become at writing/blogging. I am inspired by daily by so many blogs. heather–you ARE a writer. a GREAT writer. it’s the number one reason I continue to return to Theta Mom whenever I see a tweet notifying me of a new post. I, too, am a writer. It took me years before I could even mutter those words aloud. And then one or two more until I said them without a hesitant pause or question mark at the end of them. I started with a blog that I didn’t tell anyone about, besides my family and best friend. Then I slowly started inviting friends to read. Now, I crave, live and breathe writing. It is my daily cocktail, the knot in the end of my rope. Now, I’ve published my work, I just received a writing award (!!!) and I’ve got my fingers crossed on a major writing assignment. It’s my passion…but interestingly, I didn’t know it was my passion until I had children. They unlocked it for me.
I can’t wait to check out these two blogs. Thanks for the recommendation. xo

I love writing, but when I became a stay-at-home mom I lacked an outlet and really missed expressing myself through words. I used to hate writing, but I always did it. I always got my best grades on papers and essay tests. It wasn’t until a few years ago, though, that I started to think that I might actually like to WRITE for pleasure. I’ve always been great at making people laugh mainly through the way I tell a story. (I accredit my parents, my acting background, my childhood and my time as an improviser at Second City for that.)
Writing on my blog is a blast. Although I sometimes feel that if it were a book I was writing more time would go into carefully re-reading and re-writing. But, maybe that’s what good about it. It’s not too over-thought. I can be an overthinker. It can be really nice to have a fun idea for a post and just blast it out and feel good about it.

Shari @ Tales from the Sippy Cup says
I have never considered myself a writer. I have a love-hate relationship with writing. As a marketer, I had to write tons of ads, collateral materials and (technical) white papers. I have even ghost written numerous articles for company executives that didn’t have time to produce the content they committed to for their monthly contributor spot (oh how I wish those articles had my name on them!)
For me, writing has always been a chore and a struggle. Something that I dreaded. I never thought I was very good. Blogging has allowed me to rekindle that love for writing. Not only can I explore topics that interest me, but I am constantly exposed to some really amazing writers. I find myself, like you, blown away by their talent – inspiring me to try harder and get better and better each time.
Thanks for all you do!!

Great topic! I mentioned above, there is something in your tone that is very comforting to read. Unlike mine, from which I think you may get a sense of manic typing and a bit of yelling. : )
I do consider myself a writer. I love writing and that is one of the greater reasons I began a blog and continue contributing to it. I cannot say that all bloggers are writers. There are so many different blogs from the photo journals to the tutorial that do not focus on writing.
I am new to blogging and am still defining my own blog and tone, but as I continue blog shopping and finding new, beautiful writers, I am continually humbled. I am always interested to see the writing styles of successful. I find that most of all, great writers have a unique way of expressing universal subject matter. I feel like my writing just misses the mark on most occasions. Still, I am practicing and am continuing to improve.
I am a confident writer in that I can honestly and assuredly edit someone else’s writing, but my own? It’s very difficult.
I stumbled upon ImGonnaKillHim which is a well written, very humorous blog. I also like FiveAmazingMinutes. She has a post about knock knock jokes that had both my husband and I laughing.

Desperately Seeking SIlence says
I consider myself a writer, because I feel it is my true calling. There is nothing in this world that makes me feel more like ME than writing. Being a mother is a blessing and a gift, but writing is inherent in who I am, it’s part of my being and is intertwined with my soul’s true essence. I believe I’m a writer because I’ve always believed it. From the second grade, when I beat out all the gifted kids, and every other student, to win a short story contest. I was given the opportunity to meet an author, and take a field trip with 5 other students (and we missed school, which was the true thrill). I’ve won lots of other writing contests, and received lots of awards for my writing, but that never made me feel like I was a writer. Being a writer has always just “been there”. It’s always behind each though, each word, each move I make. It is me.
I am inspired every single day by Stephanie at Adventures in Babywearing (http://www.adventuresinbabywearing.com). I’m also inspired everyday by Arianne at To Think is to Create (http://www.tothinkistocreate.com). Both incredible women, and amazing mothers. But their writing is phenomenal.

I really think anyone can be a writer. And many people start out rocky, but the more you write, the better you become- at both telling your story and finding the right words to tell it. I have my boys write in a journal every night, for just a few minutes, and about anything they want. I hope they are always comfortable saying what they are thinking and feeling. And if they don’t feel like doing it in words, they can draw or doodle it.
When asked what I do for a living, I say I am a Mom and a writer. I am published, online and in print, even if I wasn’t, I feel it deep within my bones. I know that’s what I am and what I’ve wanted to do for as long as I could hold a pencil.
I write for me, and I write from within. Everything else has just fallen into place.

Babes about Town says
You are a natural writer Heather, with a strong authentic voice that draws people in and keeps them coming back. I think it’s strange the distinctions people make between being a blogger or a writer. Once you commit your words to the page and reach out to an audience (even if it’s just yourself) you are engaged in the process and art of writing. It is an art form, and not everybody has a natural gift, but it’s also a craft that anybody can work at and improve on.
I thought of myself as a writer long before I had anything published. When I became a mother, my writerly self became submerged beneath this new identity. Blogging about parenting in the city has helped me unify these two most important aspects of myself, as well as boosting my confidence since being out of the full-time work scene. It’s also reminded me of the sheer pleasure I find in writing (on almost any subject!) and I hope that translates through my blog.
Thanks for the inspirational post!
