Writer, blogger, mom – writer blogger, mom blogger, a blogger who is a mom that happens to write – whatever inference that is made about me or this blog, I know who I am and what defines me because I am more than just a blogger.
I am a writer.
Many would argue that in order for one to call herself a writer, she would have to be distinguished, a published author of sorts. Although I am still waiting for one of my children’s books to go to print (that will be one fine day) this blog IS published and I am the AUTHOR of this blog.
Therefore, I am a writer.
I write passionately about topics that have an impact on me. I write frequently about redefining the role of motherhood which truly is the heart and soul of this blog; the unscripted process of parenting that I navigate my way through daily. I write about my hopes, fears and aspirations because this blog is in many ways a reflection of my life. I write reviews based on products and companies that I completely trust and support. I write about the evolution of blogging including how to build community, the benefits of networking and how to reach a specific audience.
I write authentically with honesty and conviction. I know who I am and what this blog stands for and I aim to articulate this voice throughout every post. And I will never lose sight of that.
Moving forward, I also recognize what I want out of this blog as I write. I want first time visitors to become subscribers, knowing instantanly that this is a blog they want to return to. Moreover, I want you (my amazing readership) to be actively engaged, relishing in every word of every post and become immersed in this world that I create.
I want you to be informed, invigorated, motivated, reassured and inspired. I want you to leave my blog impassioned, looking forward to the next published piece.
I want my writing to resonate with you. I want the words of this blog to speak volumes.
As I cultivate, devise and completely deluge my passion for writing at Theta Mom, I am overcome by some other blogs that absolutely inspire me. When I visit these blogs I am increasingly blown away by their talent as writers. Although there are so many blogs that I read and adore, I would like to share two blogs in particular that inspire me specifically as a writer.
Jenny Mac – Let’s Have a Cocktail When I stumbled upon her blog shortly after I began Theta Mom, I knew from reading the very first post that she was a gifted writer. Her language is natural, effortless and always seamless. In addition, she is one hell of an amazing storyteller. Every time I read a post perfectly crafted by Jenny Mac, I am immediately drawn into her blog. One of my favorites is Finding Your Way, a post which clearly demonstrates her amazing ability to tell a story.
Aidan Donnelley Rowley – Ivy League Insecurities Aidan continues to impress me on so many levels. Saying that she is a gifted writer is an understatement. I found her blog only a few months ago and once I read one of her posts I was immediately hooked. She is forthright and passionate, but at times also quite vulnerable which makes her blog so relatable. She recently wrote about her late father in Maidy–Bunks’ Picnic, a beautifully written post that truly moved me.
These two talented women make me want to become a better writer and I am honored to be blogging with them. And let’s face it, we all know when it comes to blogging content is everything, right?
Now I would love to hear from you: In addition to being a blogger, do you consider yourself a writer? Which bloggers or writers continuously inspire YOU and why?
mamapoekie says
I think I lack the confidence to be calling myself a writer, I probably am since I have been writing ever since I could hold a pen and even finished a novel once (and started a couple more).
I love Boheime at living peaceflly with children, she writes beautifully to the point with few frills.
And Arwyn At Raising my Boychick is a very thought provoking author too
Anyhow, I thnk if you are blogging frequently and you can entice people to come back time and again, that does make you a writer, no matter what
Beth @ Laugh Until You Cry says
First of all, I LOVE Jenny Mac. Totally agree that she is an amazing writer. I just went and checked out ILI and completely agree with your opinion about her talent as well!
I would love to say I am a writer, but I’m not sure I portray that on my blog enough to have that label. Sure, I’ve got some posts that are great, but to stay true to myself and the reasons I blog, not every post is going to be an amazing example of top-notch writing. And I am okay with that.
Thank you for sharing those blogs!

I just recently found Jenny Mac, (loved her chocolate post a few days ago) and just visited Ivy League Insecurities–also a fantastic writer.
As a teacher, I have always tried to show my students the importance of author’s purpose. When we blog, we have a purpose. It may be personal, it may be serious, it may be reflective, and for some it may be humor. But it definitely makes us writers.

“Many would argue that in order for one to call herself a writer, she would have to be distinguished, a published author of sorts.”…you nailed it Heather. THAT’S what I struggle with. Like I haven’t “earned” the right to be called (or introduce myself) as a writer because I don’t feel I have enough credibility. I AM a writer. I write everyday. I guess I need to get past the fact I can be a “writer” even though there’s not yet a paycheck attached. AWESOME post, girlfriend.

Yes, I absolutely consider myself a writer. Am I a good writer? Sometimes. When I’m not completely blocked and have the time to sit and write something of quality.. I think I’m a pretty damn good writer. Other times I feel like I have lost my voice and have nothing to say. I feel insecure and unsure of my writing at times. But yes.. I am a writer.
Have you ever been to Helium.com? I write articles there and love the site. You can write an article about almost any topic out there. I haven’t been active there in a while, but I do love it and recommend it to any writer – especially those looking to broaden their horizons and challenge themselves a little bit.

Christine LaRocque says
Until I started finding blogs that I could relate to and be inspired and challenged by I had trouble gaining any benefit from blogging. Once I did, I was floored, by all there was to offer. I am a huge Aidan fan as well, and eagerly anticipate every post she writes. There are many others, including you, and for that I’m grateful. I’m grateful for the world it has opened up for me and I’m grateful for how it inspires me in my own writing. My blog and the network of blogs that I enjoy have made a huge difference in my life.

Christine – That’s how I feel. When I find blogs that I connect with but that also truly inspire me, I find my own writing improves. These blogs make me become a better writer and I am thankful to be among so many amazing women as well.
Aidan Donnelley Rowley @ Ivy League Insecurities says
Thank you so much. These words really mean more than you know. As I approach my one year blogging anniversary (Saturday!), I find myself to be awash in questions about WHY. Why have I fallen so hard for blogging? And I am buffeted by answers. Because it is writing, but more. It is conversation. It is life. One of the main reasons I continue on in this wonderful wilderness is the unwitting connections I have forged. With exceedingly smart and humanly flawed souls. Like you. I remember stumbling here for the first time and reading your words and nodding vigorously at the trail of truths you left. A blogger and writer who inspires me?
YOU.
That is why I am smiling today. To have a link from you and the opportunity to welcome some of your loyal bloggy buds over at ILI truly means the world.
Again, thank you.
Theta Mom says
For you to even say I inspire you – wow. Seriously. I am in awe of your writing and I am honored to be blogging with you.
Tina @ Life Without Pink says
What a great post. I have struggled with this – I found a passion for writing when I started to blog (never knew I had it). I do consider myself a writer – a good one? I’m still working on that. But I love being able to express myself and through reading other blogs I am inspired to be a better writer every day.
I can’t believe I haven’t heard of the two blogs above. I am going to check them out.one blog I LOVE to read is My Charming Kids – MckMama’s blog. Love her writing and she instantly drwas me in and makes me feel apart of her world.
Krista says
I love finding new blogs – especially ones that well written. These writers (and they are writers) could be writing about bananas or cat food and I would still be hooked. They inspire me to make my blog content better. (And they leave me wondering how they come up with ideas!)
But, me?? Um… I don’t know if I would call myself a writer. I write at work – but it’s B2B marketing stuff. I write when I blog, but I don’t proofread, research or think about the content mix enough. In all honesty, I blog because I like to write and somedays I think I’m good at it. Other days I blog because I want to show off cute pictures of my kid or brag about her latest milestone.
In addition to the community spirit that comes with it, one of my goals for blogging is to use it to become a better writer. What I’ll do with that skill as it improves is anyone’s guess….

I consider myself a writer.
The writers who I read, online or otherwise, draw me in & I want to read their words. It’s a wide range & I’m also inspired by their willingness to put part of themselves out there, it doesn’t mean they expose every detail of every aspect of their lives but when they write I feel like I have been let in to part of who they are. And that is a an amazing gift.

I dont consider myself a writer at all. I am an elementary ed teacher turned insurance pro who finds that blogging about my son and his health issues is a way to “let it out”. This is not to say that one day I will feel more secure as a writer, I am fairly new to the game, my blog only went public AFTER his preterm birth and subsequent diagnosis.
I loved this post, it helps me to see that YES, my blog can be everything I want it to be, I have visions and aspirations for it but lack the confidence to go there. Maybe one day I can confidently say , “Yes I am a writer !”

Hi!! I love this entry, I think like you, I am a writer because I write, whether that means typing, or actually scribbling,
I am a writer because I write, and one of the coolest things about this blogosphere is that to “publish” to the world, we don’t need anyone’s permission to post the content that we want, which makes the writing that much more honest. And being published on this blogosphere is still being published. I was speaking with a girl who was trying to get published a while back who was blogging, and she kept saying she wanted to be a writer, and I said back, honey you already are!!
Caroline says
I absolutely love the fact that you not only take the time to explain your own writing passion and what you want to accomplish with your words, but that you take the time to acknowledge other writers whose gift you also admire.
And, yes, I do believe that writing is one of the greatest gifts I, or anyone else, could possibly receive–the power of the written word is just, in my opinion, that important!

I too never would have considered myself a writer until I was talking to a friend of mine who IS a writer and an editor. We were talking about blogs and I told her something along the lines of how I’m not a “real writer” and she informed me that I was. I am writing something, people read it, it gets published, I am a writer! I am inspired by all of the blogs that I read. I follow blogs from people that are everyday, ordinary people who are great story tellers, and keep me entertained with each and every post. You can check out any one of the blogs I follow and know that a writer wrote it.

I am a writer. I joined a writing group, found my voice (well, I suppose that’s an ongoing journey), and started a blog. My writing group reminds me I am a writer.
Thanks for articulating what I believe: that content is paramount. And thanks for directing me to two new (for me) blogs with good content. I sometimes get caught up in trying to grow my blog, but ultimately I am in love with writing. The other stuff doesn’t matter as much…and it shouldn’t.

Everybody and his dog seems to be a Writer these days! I studied English and Creative Writing at Uni but would still humbly call myself a striving (lower case) writer. As for my blog, perhaps since it’s “published”, then I can also called myself a writer. Maybe a writer of short autobiographies of my life, and all the things I love to do.
For me it’s inspiring to write, even if no one reads. I decided to learn to bake and writing about it makes me know I’m accomplishing short term goals that are important to me. I like decorating our house so I write about that too. Anything that happens and I feel like writing about it, I do so. Writing is a therapy. It’s an outlet. No matter what you write, you write, and that makes you a writer.

I’m not sure that I think of myself as a writer, but I enjoy words and love to play with them. I completely agree that content counts! I stay away from blogs that are all about give-aways and memes. While memes might be fun (and participated in one today), I am careful to consider why I’m writing. I am honest and direct about what I am doing, and while that may mean some people don’t want to follow because they don’t agree, others will be interested and appreciate the honesty.

I don’t know if I consider myself a writer. I know I love writing, and it’s always a pleasant surprise when someone says I’m a good writer.
I consider a blogger a good writer when I don’t need pictures to keep me engaged. A friend of mine has a new blog…I’m not sure if she’d like me to post the link just yet so I won’t for now. The funny thing is, English is not her native language, and she’s really paranoid about her grammar and wouldn’t consider herself a good writer at all. I definitely consider myself a writer. Since my book is almost done, I’ve been published in one variety type book, and have magazine articles coming out I am getting used to the “writer” title. It’s funny, I don’t consider myself a writer, but I do think of myself as an artist. My blogging/web presence has been through many incarnations: LiveJournal, Blogger, .mac, and now my Red Shoe Arts site. I’ve always thought of myself as a good communicator, and I know that writing online is a great way to share my knowledge and to connect with others. What I find most interesting is that even though I started my most recent blog to share art tips for toddlers, it has quickly grown to be so much more than that. What’s even better is that I think blogging makes me a better parent. I’m thinking about blog posts every day, and so I make sure I have something interesting to blog about. Since I want my posts to be in the realm of art, education, toddlers and parenting, my son benefits from all the thinking that I’m doing about it.
And now you have an idea of what my next blog post will be about!
Katherine says
I can’t wait to check out those two bloggers.
While I do blog frequently, I don’t consider myself a writer. Maybe it’s because I’m insecure about my writing, maybe it’s because I rely on the “a picture tells a thousand words” approach too frequently. But sometimes, I feel like one of the only people who loves blogging, but doesn’t want to be a writer.

I absolutely consider myself a writer. The day I started my blog, I finally felt like I was pursuing my passion. I felt like I was taking action toward my purpose in life, rather than just having my current career and wishing I was a writer. After I finish a post, I feel high! I get great energy from the act of writing. Not only do I get to be a writer, but I am part of a community of other writers, mommies, and generally fabulous people!

Kristy – I feel the same way. The more I write and connect with the very people who are engaged with my writing, the more I want to pursue this passion!
Missy Stevens says
One of these days I’m going to comment early in the day, but until then I know I’m repeating a lot of what has already been said. My thoughts follow…
Absolutely! I am a writer. For years I’ve been a writer-in-hiding, meaning I knew at heart that I’m a writer, but I made hundreds of excuses for not actually writing anything. I thought that unless I received a paycheck for my words, or was working on a novel, that I should not call myself a writer.
The truth is that I have always been a writer, and would rather write than talk any day (and I love to talk, so that’s saying something). I decided that it was time to get back into practice and that is why I’m starting a blog. I’ve kept a private blog for my boys for a while, but wanted to engage with other writers on a regular basis. After poking around the internet and discovering all of the amazing bloggers and communities out there, I realized I have been missing out on a great experience. It’s a win-win: I get to practice writing and meet a lot of great people in the process.
Please visit my temporary site – I hope to incorporate the thoughts and opinions of my friends and family (including all of my internet friends) in my posts. I’m currently building a database of guest “experts”, so visit me and tell me if you’re an expert on anything. And I mean anything! There’s a better explanation on the blog.
Keep writing, friends!
