“Hi Heather…”
“Hey girl! How are you? I’m so glad you…”
My conversation was quickly interrupted.
“Hold on a second Mel…”
While glaring back at my son I soon replied, “I’ll have to call you back.”
Click.
“Put it down. NOW! I’m going to count to three…
“One”………(no response) “TWO!!”
I honestly didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. My son managed to take the lid off of the kitchen trash can and in a matter of seconds, he reached his greasy little hand into the trash and picked up a sopping wet coffee filter full of grinds. Holding the dirty, drenched filter used from my morning cup of coffee, he looked directly at me and smirked.
And then, he did it.
All over the kitchen floor.
The coffee filter and all of its grinds now speckled my ceramic tile, but it didn’t stop there. While wearing brand new white socks, he began to purposefully smear his feet all over it.
Laughing. Hysterically.
“THREE!!!”
Oops, this was the wrong thing to say Theta Moms, because as I lunged toward him on the count of three, my son began to run……….all over my house.
His little feet created a coffee grind trail everywhere he went.
Why didn’t anyone tell me that once I become a mom I would need to “plan” my phone calls? I never knew conversing with a friend would be so difficult while watching a toddler! I quickly realized that the days of chatting endlessly on the phone with my friends at any given moment were definitely over.
Sound familiar?

Oh honey yes, plan them post bedtime. Or when all kids are in pre-school. Or napping. Bedtime is easiest to coordinate. If you are on the same coast, all kids have to pass out sometime! I learned this one early. Otherwise not only will conversations get cut off with toddlers but your friends will witness all of the counting and the shenanigans and the time outs before you have to hang up. Not that she and all other moms would not understand but hey – this is not what you want to do with your good friends! I hope your house is okay. We don't drink coffee but I am sure if we did that would hav happened.

the phone ringing i think causes pa avlov type response in kids. they hear the phone & all the chaos they have been wanting to do before will now erupt. it never fails at my house.

Sound familiar? God does it ever! I swear as I was reading I pee'd a little I was laughing so much. I can just picture the pitter patter of little coffee feet running around the house. PRICELESS! Our sons need to meet…LOL

This is seriously one of the first things I learned when I became a mom. I even left a greeting on our answering machine something like "Hey, sorry I missed your call….we just had twins. Needless to say, leave a message…we may be able to call you back sometime….in like 5 years". Then the 2nd set of twins came along….and the greeting I left was just me laughing hysterically (I mean, really…did my friends think I'd actually be able to call them back??)
Nowadays, I try to sneak in phone calls when the kids are busy playing but even then they usually see me on the phone and that's when all hells breaks loose.
For the most part, my friends and just e-mail back and forth and plan get togethers often so we can catch up with one another. Being a SAHM can be pretty isolating….I wish someone had told me that bit earlier on.

I totally agree. I miss talking on the phone without interuptions. It seems they do it on purpose sometimes…. Thanks for the follow 😉
